The British Embassy in Sofia is pleased to announce the second round of outreach meetings for British Nationals in Bulgaria in November and December 2018.

Emma Hopkins, Her Majesty’s Ambassador and Lynne Charles, Deputy Head of Mission, invite the British community in Veliko Tarnovo and the region for a discussion on EU exit planning at Veliko Tarnovo Town Hall (Ritualna zala, to the left from the main entrance) on 15 November, from 11:30-13:00.

This meeting is an opportunity for the Ambassador to meet the local British community in Veliko Tarnovo, and give an update on our preparations for EU exit, and in particular what this means for British Nationals in Bulgaria. There will be a Q&A session where you can raise anything else of interest. The Ambassador will be accompanied by the consular team who will also be available to take questions.

Please find more information about the event on your ticket after registering here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/meeting-with-the-british-community-in-veliko-tarnovo-and-the-region-tickets-52206871157

Please note that you must register in advance in order to attend this event and bring your ticket and a photo ID with you.

Will you be posting the information from that meeting here? It could be really useful.

I can give you that info now: We have no information to give you but rest assured that we will give it to you at length and let you know what you could have read in the newspapers or on the "I Dunno, Mate" (aka FCO) website anyway. It's amusing to read the cr*p posted by dimbos on the various BritsinBG FB groups, explaining exactly what the Embassy/Consulate has to do for them..."I know my rights!"

Women and children first! Wink

Yes, I'll certainly post after the meeting.
I'm hoping for some updated information on residency, reciprocal healthcare and pension rights

The European Commission could decide British people will need permission to travel to EU countries after 29 March 2019, a requirement that usually applies to countries in the developing world.

If this is the case, Britons would have to fill in a three-page form, pay €60 (£52; $6Cool for a visa and wait up to six weeks for approval. Romantic last-minute trips on the Eurostar would become a thing of the past.

French President Emmanuel Macron suggested last month that Brits travelling to France wouldn't need visas in the event of no Brexit deal being agreed between the UK and Europe.
But will his European partners agree?

Taken from BBC News this morning.

Apparently this issue will be decided tomorrow. I hope that the meeting on Thursday will provide the answer to this and others which will affect us as individuals who live/stay in Bulgaria.

Unfortunately, these issues also have a habit of being "undecided" again when someone on either side decides to be intransigent......The show ain't over till the fat German lady sings! Wink

Lots of "coulds" "woulds" "Ifs" and "hopes" in this statement, is their any "Pie left in the sky"

Lets stop panicking and wait and see, whatever happens it wont be the end of the world.

Not my words, Tabbul, but those quoted from a BBC news item.
The issue will be decided this week and the answer, hopefully, will be available on Thursday.
There are many 'little' issues like this that don't hit the headlines but which could significantly impact on our ability to live here. Time will tell, not much of that left though!

We've just bought a sea front apartment in Sozopol at half the price it was 10 years ago, and long may they continue to fall in price.

Back to Topic.
The meeting with the Ambassador and the Consular team yesterday was obviously planned before the present furore, so, at this moment in time nobody knows, basically.

IF THERE IS A DEAL nothing will change for us living here in BG until the end of 2020, which is the end of the transition period - the UK leaves the EU next March but there then is this transition period to enable industry, for example, to develop other trading strategies.
IF THERE IS NO DEAL then who knows what will happen - the present deal, which is the subject of much controversy as I type, protects the interests of all immigrants, whether it be UK citizens living in Bulgaria, or vice versa but we would not be protected in a no deal situation. The Ambassador, however, has spoken to PM Borisov and he has assured her that British people are very welcome in Bulgaria so no doubt something would be worked out, but this would take time and there would be a period of quite stressful uncertainty.

The Ambassador did stress that anyone who has not yet applied for their residency visa should do so now to avoid any future problems.

I've just received this information from the Embassy in response to questions concerning obtaining Bulgarian citizenship and obtaining dual nationality which were put to the Ambassador yesterday

Applications for Bulgarian citizenship are dealt with by the Ministry of Justice. The terms, conditions and application forms are available at https://newweb.mjs.bg/en/list-of-documents/#art_12. Please check directly with the Ministry what the steps will be to apply for Bulgarian citizenship.

Should you need legal advice or help with translation, you may wish to refer to the lists of English-speaking lawyers and translators published on our website. Please note the disclaimers.

Dual nationality:

Conditions for applying for naturalisation:

Ø Being over 18

Ø Having a long-term or permanent residency in Bulgaria for at least 5 years

Ø Not convicted (or investigated) in Bulgaria

Ø Having sufficient income/means

Ø Good command of Bulgarian language (language exam regulated by the Ministry of Education)

Ø Previous citizenship should be renounced except for:

• Those married to a Bulgarian national

• Citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland

• Citizens of countries with which Bulgaria has reciprocal agreements

Chris, the problem is that that isn't quite what the agreement in its present form says - and bear in mind that it's expressly a DRAFT agreement, so may be altered at any time or torn up and thrown away:

For example, Article 18 (one of those covering rights of residency) states, inter alia:

The host State may require...United Kingdom nationals, their respective family members and other persons, who reside in its territory in accordance with the conditions set out in this Title, to apply for a new residence status..

and

..criminality and security checks may be carried out systematically on applicants..

Who knows how long Boyko will remain as PM - or what concessions he'll be forced to concede to his (very) nationalist and right-wing coalition partners - including Ataka, which is funded by Uncle Vlad. As we all know, he's only too happy to provoke his enemies, which these days include NATO and both the EU and UK, and he'd be only too happy to cause discord between them. Being what he imagines to be the epitome of macho man, Boyko has been known to make promises that he hasn't thought through and then change his mind afterwards; in any event, he'll be gone sooner or later, so his assurances won't be worth much in the eyes of whoever succeeds him - and I doubt they're in writing anyway.

That may, or may not, be something to be concerned about but what certainly does concern me is that "property" is mentioned 50 times in the Draft. Sadly for those UK citizens who hold real estate of whatever kind by virtue of currently being EU citizens, those references only cover Intellectual Property and the ownership of any fissile material under the EurAtom scheme (the latter probably only relevant to any UK jihadis currently building a dirty bomb in their VT basements or rural smallholdings.. Cool ). There is no mention whatsoever of what happens about newly non-EU citizens who own property through regulations which are no longer applicable to them; I'd venture to suggest that HM Ambassador either hasn't thought about that, living in a swanky version of a tied cottage as she does, or that she prefers not to be asked about the connotations.

Right of residency is all well and good, and foreign citizens are already permitted to own property in the UK on the same footing as UK citizens - but non-EU citizens do NOT have that same status in Bulgaria, so UK citizens may easily find that they are permitted to live here but that their property has to be re-registered and held through a jolly old BG company again. At the very least, it'll be time-consuming and expensive, but BG clerks are also known for making up their own "rules" when they have someone at their mercy, hence my previous (and only slightly jocular) comment about cheap property hitting the market soon... Clearly it's not a problem that anyone has thought about while banging tables in Brussels...

Those who are interested/insomniac can download a copy of the agreement HERE but bear in mind that it's 585 pages and some of it is contradictory and/or unclear (deliberately?) in meaning....and it may well be on the scrap-heap just as soon as TM is herself given the boot - or BOJO or Corbyn takes over - or a new referendum is held (possibly followed by civil war Wink ) -or - or - or....

After seeing the chaos and political anarchy in the conservative government last night on the BBC, I think its pointless to expect anything. Or plan anything. We will have to be patient and wait....
