You'll be better off just hiring a translator for a few hours: a decent one should know what is needed, will be a LOT cheaper than a lawyer and able to go with you - at a time that suits you - when you apply.

Thanks Seedy,

Not a bad idea. We had a good official translator when we bought the house provided by the vendors. She did moan a bit about helping me register the house though as she said she wasn't too knowledgeable about the legal side of things. So I just thought it might be easier to find someone experienced in legal matters who speaks English

Oh dear - if I were you I'd never use any "service" provided by a vendor, regardless of how friendly and trustworthy they may appear - or indeed really be. You have no guarantee that they're doing the job properly and it's only the Bulgarian version of any contract that's enforceable; trying to get legal redress against anyone here is pretty much impossible, so you're very much on your own.

I don't know what it's like around Silistra but here the folks in Immigration mostly speak English and are helpful if treated politely.

The house purchase went through without any problems and I trusted the Bulgarian private sellers far more than the English "agents" I had dealt with on other properties we looked at. I have no concerns and that's not being naïve. You are never 100% certain I know, but I have 40 years as a farmer dealing with all sorts of characters so have a fairly good take on people. the house was 12000 Lev, so at the end of the day I'm not gambling with a fortune.

I'm sure you're right but "without problems" here is a bit like "never say 'never'..." Very Happy Problems can come out of the woodwork years - or even decades - down the line.

You'd be amazed/horrified at some of the things I've both seen personally and heard about over the years. Of course most transactions pan out okay but when things go wrong, they can go VERY wrong! Sad
