When I first went to a POLISH former Spitfire pilot for my private Russian language lessons in Ashford, Kent, he tried to explain to me the 6 grammatical cases of the Russian language and I had to admit that I did not have a clue what any of them meant and I probably couldn't explain them all to anyone else now either.

If I worried about my Russian grammar, I wouldn't speak it at all and although, it is impressive to be word perfect, you're always going to be a foreigner with a funny accent unless you started speaking that language as a baby. My Wife is a perfectionist and also wants to get the Bulgarian grammar word perfect and I see that it holds her back sometimes. I guess this is why a few alcoholic drinks are usually helpful when speaking a foreign language.

I am of the opinion that basic English for a foreigner is easy enough to learn, but gets quite complicated as they progress. I am not sure just how many foreign languages have the THE article that changes for every noun based on gender when we just use THE for everything.

Anyway, in a few years from now, we'll all be speaking Google Translate and completely misunderstanding each other. Wink

My other half is learning from a 13 year old girl, while she is teaching her English, using English and Bulgarian teaching books. It is a mutual benefit as they both learn the same things and at the same speed, and while they are teaching they learn from eachother!

Me, I prefer to be like the most ex-pats, why should I learn Bulgarian, everybody speaks and should speak English these days, and if I don’t understand something, I ask, you’ll be surprised of what you can learn when you ask! Laughing

i think i agree with this. i came to Bulgarian for lots of reasons but the real reason i do not know.

About the language, i am qute mathematical and have NO language talent. But because i am more stupid and slower learning than most of my seven brothers, sun and father (some of them with very high IQ), i did a challenge: After i became 50 years i challenged that i would learn a foreign language that i could not read nor understand, read nor write.

But... i remembered my youngest sister, my oldest daughter and myself needed four years before we started to speak in our native language (Flemish, is not Dutch) and we had to learn Dutch at the age of six, French at the age of 10, English at the age of 12 and German at the age of 16 in school.

i am in my fourth year so i proved to be dumber.

But... if i can do it, you can indeed.

Easy language learning is just bull shit: It neefs blood, dweat and tears for everybody.

It needs exercise and repeating and ing and getting up, giving up and restarting.

The cyrillic part, i was afraid that it was the hardest part, but seemed out to be the easiest oart. The verbs and grammar are something else.

But unexpected, i thought learning BG was stupid because there as less speakers than even Dutch speakers. And that was not true... i learn the grammar and climb this way to 21 languages in one go with Bulgarian:Makedonian, Serbian, Kroatian, Slovenian, even Slovak, Bosnak, Tsjech and Polish are suddenly not a shock anymore like Bulgarian used to be. And the Pravda, i can read it now so even Russian becomes possible.

i listen to music of Tose Proeski and the Albanian song Nentori could be understood after studying it extra.

And the feeling of the heart is opening so big since i saw Vreme Razdelno and talked about this with Slavic people. i study as wel the Edict of Serdika instead of the Edict of Milan and learn to combine atheism and arianism with islam and orthodox and roman christianism so it is like i became a child again after becoming 50 years...

i hope my story hear will learn people to just go slowly, степкъ по степкъ or step by step (is close to english, but i prefer studying French to BG: nous sommes > nie sme, vous ętes = estes > vie ste, et puis > posle) and have patience.

The way to the heart is the way to learn BG...
