Is there a limit to the amount of cash someone can bring into Bulgaria? If so, where can I find details?

Yes, there is a limit. Scroll down on the link and you will come to cash.
europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/carry/alcohol-tobacco-cash/index_en.htm

The link hasn't come out right, you will need to copy and paste.

OK. So if I declare that I have, say, 20,000 Euros, i.e. above the limit, what happens then?

If you declare it as you are supposed to, you may have to fill in a form and will probably be questioned as to why you are carrying that amount of cash, where it came from etc.
This is because of Money Laundering Regulations and Proceeds of Crime Act.

If you decided not to declare it, there are Customs dogs that are trained to sniff out cash.
Not saying you would be caught by a sniffer dog but if you were, there can be a fine and possible loss of the cash because it had not been declared.

Or you could have the money transferred by electronic means or whatever, if that is an option for you.

I don't know what happened to my previous reply, so here goes again... Very Happy

There is NO LIMIT to how much currency (or certain precious items) you can carry within the EU but individual countries may require you to declare anything over, as in BG's case, €10,000.

There is NO penalty for declaring it but it can (and likely WILL) be confiscated if you don't!

The BG declaration form can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/y62kejfl

Bear in mind that real estate properties and other expensive items are often quoted in euros but payment is normally made in leva. Any transaction, regardless of what it is, over €5,000/10,000 leva (or any part thereof) MUST be made via a bank transfer - a fine will be levied AND the property and/or cash can be confiscated if this rule is not adhered to....
