Hi

I keep getting bizarrely conflicting advice about exchanging a UK licence, so I thought I'd see if anyone has any real-world experience.

AFAIK, I need a Lichno, GB licence and a medical certificate.

All of this is fine.

Some 'service providers' insist I need a high school certificate, while others say I do not.

The European Commission website appears to agree with those who say I do not need a high school certificate.

The plan at the moment is to do the exchange in Sofia. Does anyone have any recent experience?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

We have just done ours albeit at the Veliko Tarnovo KAT.

Documents required: Residency Card with Photo, Passport, UK Licence (together with photocopy of), Medical Certificate from Doctor covered in numerous stamps!

Took all documents to VT KAT where we given the relevant application form to complete, handed it back over with above documents to be then given a declaration form to complete and sign. Then we had our photo taken, given a "talon" ticket to show when we return to collect the Bulgarian Licence in three weeks.

We had assistance from people who did all our car registration etc for us but after seeing the forms we could have completed the process at KAT by ourselves. Time in KAT @ 45 mins for two licences.

Prices: Doctors certificate 20 lev, Licence process (including our assistant) 34 lev per licence.

We were quoted 50 lev by someone to help us at KAT that did not not include any other cost except their time so be warned there are plenty of people out to make a fast buck or should that be lev at your expense.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Nearly forgot this was just for a car licence

I changed mine at Yambol KAT.

Pretty much the same as Janus except I had to have a eye test as I wear glasses at 20 lev.
I kept my car, trailer and van licences and decided to drop all the other categories for which I to submit a written statement declaring my desire to do so. Interestingly, they all seemed to think I was a professional driver because I had categories from motorbike to HGV (but I've not used them in a couple of decades).

I found it relatively straightforward and only used a translator at KAT for 20 lev. All in all about 80 lev. If I'd waited until this month it would have become cheaper still as the charges are supposedly age related.

I also discovered I had a speeding fine from 2016 that I'd no idea about which had never been served on me, but it was only 35 lev so at least I'm no longer 'wanted' Laughing
I'm happy to have done it, but it seems different KAT's do things slightly different as they interpret it differently.

In theory at least, you also need to have been officially resident - ie with a residence permit - in Bulgaria for at least six months before they'll exchange. I don't know how strict KAT are on that point though....

Thanks for the heads-up, Seedy!... Strange as the translation comes up 100% OK for me on clicking the link.

OK - If people are interested they can just copy the link supplied BELOW (not above, as stated) the video and put it through Google Translate for themselves.

Or the link is here: https://bit.ly/2RMaeCT Wink

Unfortunately, and as usual Very Happy , there are still a few questions left unanswered by MVR!

Doesn't one just love Bulgaria
Took Lily to Varna KAT to transfer her UK licence for a BG version
Application refused on the grounds that her address is not valid - go home to pick up ACt 16 for clarification and return to KAT.
Further clarification required go to Varna municipality.
Documents deemed OK, perhaps the local Primorski municipality has made a change, off to Primorski. They advise an address change but this is not accepted by KAT as its not registered on Lily's ID. Off to Interior Registry for the address change but they advise this must be done at Primorski who in turn are not authorized to change such information.
There endeth one more day in Varna

This is bizarre. After a trip to my solicitor at first glances it would appear as though Varna is trying to organise addresses in the Villa areas. It seems as though villa area addresses have be made null and void on the municipal data base. The local municipalities have the job of supplying an address format which has not been done. So Lily now has no address and therefore cannot apply for a Bulgarian DL. This may or may not be resolved next week.

Of course it's bizarre: Тук е България!

But they're all bloody amateurs here when compared to Greek Pen-pushers and Makers-up of "Regulations" As The Fancy Takes Them... Cool

I picked up my new licence today, plus the paper card with 39 points on. So hopefully no more hassle until I'm 70, unless you have to change it if I get a hankering for the mountains or sand between my toes..... Rolling Eyes
