Recently I read on some Greek newspaper an interview with James Taylor of the James Taylor quartet fame. Am pretty fond of his British flavoured acid jazz that includes a number of well known works e.g. the theme of 'Starsky and Hatch', the 'Wait a minute' as well as many-many others.
A small surprise for me, in the last question Taylor was asked if there has been something musically fascinating he listened to lately, a kind of a proposal for the readers he has to make, to which he responded: "lately not, but I was always charmed from Ravel’s 'Gaspard de la nuit' performed by Martha Argerich".
Was privileged to listen this magnificent piece originally many years ago performed by a Romanian pianist whose name unfortunately I fail to recall, sorry must be the age thing, on a fantastic night that remained a kind of a milestone in my humble life.
Ravel composed this extremely demanding masterpiece in three movements (Ondine, Le Gibet and Scarbo) after a poem by Aloycius Bertrand. Argerich is an acclaimed pianist of Argentinean origin, you may enjoy her performing 'Ondine' here. Alternatively you may enjoy Ivo Pogorelitch -another gifted Croatian this time- on all three movements of Gaspard de la nuit there.
I adore this piece and wanted to share it with you.

I learned years ago about JAZZ that there are those that hear the music and there are those that don't. I DON'T - it is usually just 3 guys doing their own thing and I cannot make any musical sense out of it. Sorry. BTW, it was Starsky and HUTCH - one of my favourite TV programmes back in the day, but that day must have been in the 70's at a rough guess. |

Their motor with the white flashes is still looking good.
Just came back to me in a flash, Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul.
Notice what I did there, supplant JAZZ with SOUL. |
